Apple iPad App Devlopment

I don't claim to be an apple fanboy, but I really like the iPad as a platform and recently have begun playing with the SDK and developing Apps.

Many moons ago I developed apps on the Palm platform, primarily for my own use, and I am a strong believer in building your own tools. Unfortunately my knowledge of C dates back to a second year comp-sci course back in late 90s and I need to ramp up my knowledge of objective C before I can build some serious applications. As development is all about collaboration, I did what I do best and made a quick and dirty prototype, wrote a basic spec doc, and then solicited a talent friend to make it work they way i wanted it to.

Below is a live shot of Jolt Media's first basic brochure app, Ducati 748, featuring my favorite motorcycle. I no longer own this motorcycle, but now I can carry one around on my iPad.

Since Facebook released its new profile layout last week, designers and hacks alike have begun playing with their photo stream to create cool looking profile pages.

Here's a shot of my first attempt (a hack of www.jolt.ca):

NOTE: Alignment in google chrome is slightly off, and probably not noticeable if i wasn't using text. Safari and Firefox look fine on the mac.

Florian Stravock created a nice video tutorial that shows you the basic steps in creating your own using photoshop:

Photoshop a Zombie in Five Easy Steps

Disclaimer: Before we begin, you should know that I am not a photoshop expert, or even good at it, and the last time I seriously tried to learn photoshop was back in 1997. I still have the Photoshop 4 book, sitting unread, on my shelf. So I'm more of a photshop hack, and yesterday with almost no knowledge i was able to quickly create a decent zombie pic. So grab some Halloween spirit and lets photoshop.

Make Quick and Dirty Zombie with Photoshop

Start with a decent photo of yourself or your intended victim.

1. The Eyes are the windows to the soul, and our soulless zombie needs dead eyes. All i did was take the Dodge Tool and work the eyes until they were lifeless, dead and evil looking.

2. Zombies are Pale, so lets play with the Brightness and Contrast. Either of the entire photo or just the skin.

3. Zombies are Blue-ish (or whatever colour you want), so lets select the face with say the Polygon or Magic Wand, create a layer out of it and Adjust the Color Balance (Apple-B on your mac).

4. Burn Zombie Burn! Zombies look bruised and bloodied, go nuts with the Burn Tool, I did some burning before and after i made the zombie blue and pale, I just can't get enough of the burn tool.

5. Feed Your Zombie - Zombies eat raw flesh and are not clean about it. To quickly create blood dripping from your mouth; I created a new layer (or forgot too on one side) used the polygon tool to draw out the blood shape, filled it with red paint, went with the smudge tool and then back to my favorite new friend the Burn tool. You can get really fancy here and create nice effects with layers of blood and transparency, so do as little or as much as you want.

Your done, so post your pic to your favorite social network and enjoy the Halloween accolades of your friends and family.

Real World Browser Stats

There has been a lot of hype in the media this week, stating that use of Internet Exporer use has fallen bellow 50% of market share.

From CNN Money:

StatCounter, which tracks Internet data, said that IE's share of the browser market fell to 49.9% in September. More people still use IE than any other single browser, but the combined market share of non-Microsoft browsers now outpaces IE.

Not being one to take their word for it (Sorry CNN), I went and checked some of the websites I run, and their roll-up reports in Google Analytics.

Based on over 5.1 Million Visits in the past 30 days, these sites (based in Canada) still show IE with more than 57% share, and Firefox in the number two spot at 21%.

I'm not stating that IE is not on the decline, but despite the hype, the reality here in Canada still has Microsoft and Internet Explorer leading the pack.

~ BTW, this post is written on a Mac using Chrome ;)

The CellScope is very cool use of techonoly to help Doctors diagnose disease in remote areas using a cell phone camera and a portable microscope.

University of California, Berkley, Professor Daniel Fletcher and his team had an idea that now helps to save lives. They took a microscope, a Nokia N95, and put them together. They call it the CellScope. A super-portable microscope imaging device, perfect for diagnosing diseases in remote areas in developing world countries. Images of cell samples can be captured then sent by MMS anywhere in the world for instant analysis. Brilliant.

Cool example of HDR Video

Last night I watched a documentary on soviet era photography and today I found this cool example of HDR Video using 2 digital SLR cameras from Soviet Montage Productions.

HDR Video Demonstration Using Two Canon 5D mark II's from Soviet Montage

This video highlights several clips we've made using our new High Dynamic Range (HDR) process. Video is captured on two Canon 5D mark II DSLRs, each capturing the exact same subject via a beam splitter. The cameras are configured so that they record different exposure values, e.g., one camera is overexposed, the other underexposed. After the footage has been recorded, we use a variety of HDR processing tools to combine the video from the two cameras, yielding the clips you see above.

HDR Video provides filmmakers with many exciting new opportunities. Not only can HDR video create interesting effects, it can also allow for even exposure where artificial lighting is unavailable or impractical. For example, when a subject is backlit, one camera could be set to properly expose the subject, the other the sky, resulting in video with perfect exposure throughout.

Cool iPhone App for Creating Cubist Portraits

I've had an iPhone for almost a year now but I'm not a fan of paying for Apps, and I have only ever purchased one for Geocaching. But today I found that fellow Augmented reality proponent, James Alliban, has released a very cool and clever app for the iphone called Fracture.

Fracture allows you to paint cubist style portraits using your own photos. Aesthetics employed by abstract masters such as Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque have been studied and recreated in this fun creative app.

Simply use your camera or search your image gallery for 1 or more photos, adjust the settings to your specification and you are ready to start painting

So if you a fan of Cubist paintings or just like to mess with photos on your phone, go out and grab a copy of Fracture on iTunes.

Electric Sheep Creator Spot Draves at Gnomedex

I first started creating digital artwork back in the mid 80s on my IBM PCjr in amazing 16 colours. In the 90s I switched to using Director and then Flash 3+ to create various pieces that I have long lost to the digital scrapheap. Last week at Gnomedex 10 in Seattle I watched artist/programmer/DJ & Googlite Scott Draves present 2 decades of open source artwork, and i wished I could recover some of my lost art.. but at the same time my work could never compare to the amazing and complex work Scott produces like the Darwinian AI Screen-saver Electric Sheep. Watch the video from gnomedex, and ask yourself if androids dream of electric sheep.

Getting Social with Flock

After hearing non-stop chatter about locally developed Flock browser, I decided it was time to give it a try. Flock is a "social web browser" build on the Mozilla platform, developed in Victoria, BC and I was looking for a way to easily integrate Blogger and Twitter postings. Although I've not yet figured a way to make it work, so far it looks promising.

I'm using flock for this blog post and although I like the drag and drop interface, my first attempt at dragging a photo to the blog editor has caused some strange re-sizing issues.

I'll continue to use put Flock through its paces for the next week, and re-post my findings.

#Gnomedex 09

I've had a few days to decompress from Gnomedx 09 in Seattle. It was a great conference filled with insights, innovations & emotion. I purchased a book, a CD and left with a bag full of swag, which i doled out to family and friends. I left feeling re-charged and with a desire to do more in the social media realm, to start writing again and to put myself out there. Many thanks to @ChrisPirillo and his crew, for hosting this event.

Here are some of my thoughts/takeaways:

Location : Great, i loved the bell centre and the fact that it was right next to the Victoria Clipper dock.

Format : I really like the single stream format, you could just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Speakers : Eclectic mix, some emotional, some funny, and some inspired, only one i found a bit dull, but I took something from each of them.

Vibe : Cool, fun, geeky, excited.

Food : Excellent!

Attendees : I admit, I knew people already and I was not as social as I should have been, but everyone I got a chance to talk to was interesting, open and sincere.

Coolest Swag : frog, ninja, flask.

Organizers : Great people all of them, and hey free drinks!

Negatives : Hmmm, the TBD session on Saturday afternoon should have been pushed until then end of day, i had to catch a boat and missed the last two speaker :(

Rants : My damn Twitterberry was not working, only figured out on the way home that it was not auto-detecting networks, I #BlameDrewsCancer. Also my 4 star hotel did not allow for SSL, WTF?

Twitter : I twittered as much as possible during the event, but it was hard to pay attention and keep twittering. Thankfully i started following @daveDelaney at the start of the conference, he can type way faster than i can.

Shameless Self Promotion with Social Media

Recently I've been getting a lot of questions from co-workers and friends about Facebook & Twitter and other social media and how it can be used to promote their websites and online business. I work in the media business and the newspapers are looking to grow readership and ultimately drive traffic to their websites. In these lean times people are also looking for ways to self promote in non traditional methods and emerging trends without spending any money.

Here are some basic social media sites and tips to driving traffic and readership on your website:

1. Start a Blog - In the fast paced world of micro-blogging, traditional blogs are still a relevant form of social media. Blogs that inform and help people are worth reading. And Opinion based witting is perhaps the most popular form of blogging today. With everything you do you should try and keep you Blog on topic and with a general purpose. Of course with Blogging the hardest thing is to keep it going, so set some realistic deadlines for your own content, and be consistent.

2. Twitter - Your opinion in 140 characters or less, AKA micro-blogging. Despite the hype surrounding twitter, it continues to grow and is a great way to engage your readers. From my perspective the sheer speed of the conversation and the ability to market yourself directly to people who want to follow you, has amazing potential for self promotion. 3. Facebook & Myspace - The king and queen of online social media sites. Myspace has been losing ground to facebook for some time now and both are losing ground to Twitter, both are still great sites for narcissistic self promotion. The keys here is to keep your personal life separate form your business life. In facebook, create a group as opposed to an account and invite others to join. Again, stay on topic, consistent, and up to date with your postings.

4. YouTube - Nothing goes viral like video - YouTube has become so popular and grown so fast, that they seemed to have forgotten a business model, and are losing tons of money just to keep themselves going. This free video service is an easy way to display corporate ads, but unless your ads are really good no one will want to watch them, so consider creating videos that can teach, inform and entertain.

5. All the rest - Flickr, Digg, Feedburner, Delicious, etc, the list goes on and is always expanding, spend some time online reading and finding the tools or sites that will work best for you and your business goals.

One of the keys to effectively using these streams is to engage your readers, be authentic, and consistent, don't be a spammer, but give your audience a reason to read your posts or watch your videos.

Online Longevity - my mid 90s website still going strong!

Today I was watching a video on the first bloggers, and it occurred to me that I was blogging back in the mid 90s and yet the pages I created are long since dead and buried, fading away long ago with my University & Geocites Accounts. Then I recalled that I had built a website while working at the University of Toronto back in 1995/96 and that I had last updated the website with a slick javascript drop-down menu and stylish background some time in mid 1997. So I looked up the site, and behold, they have not changed it from my original 1997 design! WOW 12 years and the site has remained virtual unchanged. They have of course updated and augmented content, but my original structure, headings, logos & navigation have remained and somehow stood the test of webtime!

I don't know how or why this has happened. It was a simple site and the original requirements were to keep it lean and image free for quick modem downloads. It seems those simple requirements have sustained the site over all these years, despite various boards and directors that have come and gone and all the part-time students that have worked there and must have looked at the site and said "whoa this is old". Although the site looks dated and shows its age, with horrid framesets and poorly created images, its a useful site and seems to have worked to serve its purpose.

I'm sure they have plans on the books to re-develop some time soon, but hope it sticks around a while longer as a reminder to my naive begging into web development. I recall the last re-design meeting I had with the stakeholders who took issue with my radical drop-down menu navigation, thinking no one would be able to figure it out how to use the site, and also thinking that the should do the main APUS logo in black and white to save on bandwidth, as their students were lucky if they even had dial-up. I also recall setting up a PC as a kiosk in the office next to the photocopiers to service the students that had no internet access, and didn't want to walk all the way to the library to get information. If only we had also severed coffee we would have been the first internet cafe in town....

As I look to my team of developers to create the next evolution of our online newspapers sites and i sift through tweets, blogs and stories of the latest news on HTML 5 and happenings at GoogleIO, I smile thinking how a simple basic site written so many years ago can still be relevant and useful today.

Hitting the wall with Google Ad manager

I Recently converted our usedeverywhere.com websites over to the Google Ad Manager (GAM) platform, but I hit a wall...

Google recommends you use no more than 1000 Ad slots. But my pilot site was running well with over 2500 ad slots and I was planning to roll out to 10+ sites, with a total of more than 25,000 possible ad slots...

I met with Google and they recommended doing this with custom targeting, using category & sub-cats. Unfortunately the targeting they proposed would not work for us, and I'd already set up the first batch of Ad slots so i posed the question: "Can your application handle 30,000 ad slots and 2500 placements?" The answer was yes, but it may slow down forecasting... so no big deal....

Well, as it turns out the real answer is NO, GAM can't handle that many Ad slots. Sure the underlying system can handle it (Doubleclick perhaps??), but the Inventory Tab becomes completely unusable and the I can no longer create new Ad Placements!

So, I then switched directions, revisited targeting and went back down a reasonable 2,500 Ad tags divided into 300 Placements and targeted by site. Now I'm just faced with having to archive the remaining 28K Ad slots left in the system, but otherwise things have worked themselves out .... The moral of the story: Never trust what SalesEngineers tell you, even if they are Google - and - always test the limits on your own.

Despite hitting the wall with Google, in over 9yrs of working with Ad serving systems, GAM is the easiest to deploy and teach others to use... and I will eventually look at deploying GAM system wide. ;)

Will April Fools Day End?

Well April fools day came and went, and despite all the hype and panic, the Confiker virus launched without any real problems. Coincidentally a couple large DNS companies started having real serious problems, disabling access to websites across the world wide web.

First UltraDNS the company that control domains for giants like Amazon.com, went down under a Denial of Service Attack, Then Register.com had a 3 hour outage yesterday and is down again today! Seems like a long running joke with no end in sight.

Despite these major outages there has been almost nothing reported in any of the mainstream media, and in fact the news broke first on Twitter.com. This lack of info prompted me to start tweeting again, and after all the Register.com customers started jumping on Twitter, Register.com started using Twitter for damage control.

As I write this Register.com is still down for the count, their latest tweet stating:

Register_com@SeanToohey Register.com is having intermittent service issues - we have everyone working on it. Will provide an update soon.

UPDATE:
After filing this blog on my company website, Register.com reported this:

We experienced a DDoS attack today- all customer sites/services have been restored; we continue to have intermittent outages on our website

Register.com has gone down again!

A day after of a serious DoS attack at ultraDNS, Register.com had been knocked out for several hours this afternoon.

Unable to find any news or get an answer out of Register.com, I restarted my twitter and blogger accounts to start posting info.

Seems like twits were the first to start mentioning the issues. I guess i should start using it again.. ;)
